the website of the National Bioethics Committee (NBC).

Science and technology continue to advance by leaps and bounds, to the tremendous benefit of all. In recognition of this, the Korean government enacted the Bioethics and Safety Act to promote the health of the people and improve their quality of life. The Act affords safeguards against any violations of human dignity and values, or infliction of bodily harm during the course of research on human beings and human materials, or while handling human embryos, genes, and other human matter.

Our committee was established on April 7th, 2005, in accordance with the Bioethics and Safety Act, and lies under the direct jurisdiction of the Presidential commission. The NBC deliberates on topics related to bioethics and provides advice on diverse issues such as basic national policies on bioethics and safety to the President and the executive branch.

There is clearly a disturbing lack of appreciation of the value of human life today, throughout all of society. Should we fail to uphold the sanctity of life, no one will remain to defend human dignity. The NBC strives to foster a culture of respect for life, and it looks forward to working together with other national and international bioethics organizations to help establish a global culture of respect for life. As the chairperson of our committee, I pledge that the NBC will do its part towards that end.
